Hello list,

Thanks all for the replies!
Well I've been able to repair my installation using the 11.2 M7 DVD. I then attempted to use splashy on place of bootsplash, but this doesn't works as expected.
If you were able to get to the menu.lst in /grub/boot then all you need to have done is to rename menu.lst.old to menu.lst (and either remove the existing, non-working, menu.lst or rename it to something like menu.lst.old.old).
When a new kernel is installed, it renames the exsting (old) menu.lst to menu.lst.old and then creates a new menu.lst. Normally this is done without creating any problems but the MSx series obviously has a bug in it and the new menu.lst created is rubbish.

Thank you Basil, yes I discovered this kind of issue, so I am now more comfortable when a repair is requested.
BR,
If you have a copy of SYSTEM RESCUE DISC (search for it) then you can mount the partition containing the oS installation and use mc (Midnight Commander) to do the renaming of menu.lst.old --- or do any other fiddles you want :-) . (Read the instructions which come up in SRD about creating a mount directory to mount devices. Nothing big, but important.)
