My old machine (FUJITSU ESPRIMO E5730, Core2 Duo E8500@3.16GHz, 8GB RAM) was using about 40W idling (disks off,...). The new one (FUJITSU ESPRIMO P757, Core i3-6100@3.70GHz, 8GB RAM) is using about 20W in the same configuration.
20 Watts saved is about 175kWh per year. I'm going to pay 38,92¢/kWh from 2023-01-01. This means I'm going to save about 68€ per year with the new machine. The machine cost about 85€ from a professional seller on ebay.
Do your own math.
If you consider you can also sell the E5730 for ~€25-€40 on eBay, then you find yourself in a situation where moving to the new hardware actually more than pays off in the first year.
