What exactly is causing the issue now for TB is unfortunately unclear as I could not reproduce that anywhere. If people are curious and have a backup ;-) you can try to fiddle with the addonStartup.json.lz4 file modifying or even removing it. It should be recreated but might not have the stored state of addons (enabled, disabled, etc) anymore.
I did remove addonStartup.json.lz4 but that did not help. Also, the "disable all addons" and "reset all toolbars"(?) options when starting with --safemode did not help at all. It did start up in safe mode, but only in safe mode. I also did then (from safe mode) remove all (already disabled) addons, this also did not help. I then tried to reset most settings in about:config to defaults, but there are so many that this also did not help. Then I restored the backup and tried the thunderbird.net tarball. That one worked. After starting the tarball binary, the opensuse binary still did not work (I tried to check if it is a kind of "can not migrate the config" issue). And then I remembered the translations, and tried removing them. I have a backup that is able to reproduce the hang, so if you want me to test something specific, just ask :-) The first thing a working thunderbird does is ask me for my master password. The non-working one did not ask me but just hung somewhere.
