When you install Grub2 it should offer the root partition to install or "Boot from the Root Partition".
It does, but there have been problems with Leap 15 setting the legacy_boot flag needed to boot a non-efi system with a gpt partition. See boo#1084017.
When I use YaST => System => Bootloader, it is now setting the flags correctly, but I'm not sure what would happen with a new installation.
