Not having /var/log/messages does not "break" anything, does it? I can perfectly remove that file and my system keeps on running.
That's fine for you but there are a log of monitoring and security robots which are configured to watch /var/log/messages. Many users have advanced syslog setups running, so please don't remove syslog at least in "zypper dup" case.
The only 'breakage' is documentation... which, of course, needs to be adjusted to represent that.
