All this is done remotely via serial console and using the grub runtime tool works perfectly for me.
Lucky guy. Almost none of my test machines has serial still.
Unless we're talking IPMI Serial-over-LAN, a serial connection also only works when you're fairly close to the box.
Or if you have a terminal server.
