I fear that xpdf-tools are required for next, upcoming CUPS versions, as there is the accepted opinion that PDF (and no more PostScript) will be the internal transport format for CUPS.
xpdf-tools are required fullstop. pdfinfo and pdffonts are essential tools with no alternatives (I don't call cranking up acroread an alternative, and I don't think it gives as much info either).
pdftops is the only usable conversion tool handling fonts correctly, that abominable ghostscript rubbish has all fonts outline-traced and replaced with polygons and/or bitmap (type 3) fonts.
I find pdfimages irreplacable too.
Bottom line: xpdf-tools are indispensable. Personally I don't like to be without xpdf either, but I se Ludwig's point.
We should switch to poppler-tools: it provides the same tools as xpdf-tools, and it's better for security reasons (as already pointed out before in the thread).
