I also had difficulties, booted update provided reduced screen resolution. reinstalling nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-default corrected.
Just to confirm, you don't run primus/bumblebee, but just the plain nviia stuff from the nvidia repo? The laptop update meanwhile finished. Compiling the kernel modules went smooth, and the system runs as usual. I do however boot into the Intel-powered desktop (Skylake built-in) and only use bumblebee/optirun for accelerated stuff. But that works without issues here.
