It looks like the whole thing is cross-scripting too much, but I haven't yet found where exactly it fails and why it's doing this now when it worked before in the same situation.
It turns out that this is an incompatibility between FF42 and the CookieManager extension (plus some interaction with https/secure cookies apparently). If Cookies are globally disabled, then (temporary) enabling cookies via CookieManager allows the cookie to be set and read, however the originating site still gets told that cookies are disabled. Is there a Firefox ESR for Tumbleweed?
