Actually, its a combination of both. With 'hardware dependencies' (see http://en.opensuse.org/Software_Management/Dependencies/Hardware) we are trying to move this kind of 'knowledge' away from the installer into the package. Of course, you still need a dependency resolver able to understand these special dependencies. But we don't have to adapt YaST anymore everytime a hardware dependant package changes. In the future, we want to be able to access HAL capabilities via dependencies like "HAL(gb_memory) >= 4" for kernel-bigsmp.
