Well, when I am in my sailboat coming across another sailboat, and I get to address one sailor in particular in the other sailboat, saying "<proper name>, your sailboat is sailing West", that is usually not interpreted as in a way that contradicts the proposition that the other sailboat is being managed and steered collectively. It is in fact compatible with that proposition, and with any proposition about the relationship between the addressed sailor and the rest of the crew. There is no need for interpreting my sentence otherwise :)
