There is no real man page for this config file. Its a text file that's ostensibly self-documenting. Apparently it hasn't been updated in a very long time. Most recent touch to a bug report with string "/windowmanager" in summary was over 4 years ago (gdm ignores DEFAULT_WM...). Here's TW's list of possibilities for the windowmanager to be used by default:
## Type: string(gnome,kde4,kde,lxde,xfce,twm,icewm)
As it apparently has been since the beginning of time, a minimal X installation preserves this too:
DEFAULT_WM="twm"
I don't know if kde4 ever worked in it. Instead,
DEFAULT_WM="kde-plasma"
has been required for KDE4 to start by running simply 'startx' from a vtty. It does not work for Plasma5. That it doesn't is why the problem reported in http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=929016 was discovered. What does, or should, cause Plasma5 to be the default?
