If you've really ever done real forensics, you'd probably value signed tamper-proof log entries.
Yes, I do. But that can be done with text too. Ever heared of GPG ASCII armor? (I do cryptography and security too, before anyone questions my competence on the field)
[1] human readable is not about character set, it's about words. Human readable means an alphanumeric representation that can be easily understood by a human without software aids (other than display).
I really want to see someone read /var/log/messages without software aid. I cannot.
Never did myself. I always grep for quick insight. Can you grep binary logs? [0]
And there is no reason why "less" will not gain the ability to read journal entries, just like it is able to read messages.gz.
Will sed too? Will tail? Will all the other text tools? [0] There's no denying that text processing tools far outnumber journal processing tools. Remember, it all started when some guy wrote a set of text processing tools for IBM. And that it would be dreaming in colors to expect all those tools to be "upgraded" to work with journal files. Mostly because it's indeed outside the scope of those tools. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
