It seems to me that the right thing to do is to not break peoples' installations, but to use the desired "new" behaviour on new installations.
At best, for those who have a configuration that's working for them, we could use what Darin suggests (the lecture facility) to display a message, but do it without changing the user's chosen behaviour. Leave the choice to change the configuration up to the user.
Dominique has reverted sudo to the previous sudo behaviour in the meantime. Ciao, Marcus
