I'm experiencing a different problem with the new Thunderbird major release which is also rather odd and not always reproducible. What happens is that when I want to reply to an email and the compose window opens, pressing any letter on the keyboard or the arrow keys will invoke the menu instead of starting to edit the text, i.e. the keyboard focus is on the menu, not in the body text.
