These are automatically added for "default applications" which you can set in KDE's systemsettings. However when I removed the task-bar and re-added it they did not appear anymore. Might be a bug though.
The issue with the "ghost" applications basically looks like a running application in the taskbar that remains behind after you exist the application. You cannot interact with this application button since the application it's representing is no longer running.

There is another patch that is worth pulling into 4.7.2 in case the fix really got removed due to personal problems a dev has with a user.
It would be really good for openSUSE if we were able to pull these patches into the 12.1 release. Regarding the bugs.kde.org reports... it really is shameful that certain prima-donna developers take such a snarky attitude with the KDE users who are frustrated by the apparent lack of response on a bug report. Oh well... we can do better :-) If the patches are released with 12.1, we will have a KDE 4.7.1 that is better than everyone elses. It's a win-win.
