I have a thinkpad T430 with nvidia NVS 5400 M graphics card. Is that with Optimus enabled or disabled in the BIOS? The T430 has an Nvidia Quadro NVS 5400M... which should be able to run as Optimus=enabled or Optimus=disabled. If Optimus is enabled, then it's no surprise that the open source driver doesn't do much more than what you described. It's also possibly why you encountered "buggy"

If you simply install the Nvidia proprietary drivers onto a system that has Nvidia Optimus (either as the only config or with it enabled in the BIOS on systems that allow this), you will get loads of crashes and odd behaviour (if you can get it to boot up with video at all).

I am not sure but one needs to look at what has been said about the kernel being used. I have the 5400M chip on my ThinkPad but I am also running the 'latest' stable kernel 3.13.6-2. My understanding is when I first started asking about the Thinkpad back last November when I was thinking of buying one was that the kernel which came with 13.1 could not handle this 5400M chip but that the (?)3.12.x kernel would have the ability. Well, we are now into 3.13.x. I don't recall altering any settings in my BIOS of the ThinkPad for the graphics chip and I am not having any hassles on ThinkPad. Lucky? Don't know what I am talking about? Who knows :-) . But I cannot get the wi-fi working after re-installing 13.1 on the ThinkPad :'( . Damn if I know what the problem is. I know that the wi-fi gizmo is recognised - YaST tells me so - but I cannot get it to connect to the router. But that's another story......:-) .
