Don't put kcheckpass under SUID root if you can: first, check your /etc/pam/ directories for .rpmnew files. With the proper configuration, kcheckpass doesn't need SUID root.
I replaced the /etc/pam.d/common-*-pc with files gathered from another system. The change was mainly replacing pam_unix2.so by pam_unix.so (partly with additional parameters) and adding pam_env.so to common-session-pc. Now unlocking the screensaver also works when kcheckpass is not SUID root.
