Thanks again for the information. It looks like things are rendering with Mesa, which is unacceptably slow, even when the backend is set to OpenGL 2.0.
Again, it shouldn't be "unacceptably" slow IMHO. Have you tried switching to XRender? Have you tried to disable desktop effects completely?
There are also some other things that are simply fundamentally broken. No taskbar, no menu when right clicking on the desktop, some changes in systemsettings not working.
This would sound like you still have problems with the (intel) graphics driver. Does the same happen in "recovery mode"? Did you run "mkinitrd" after uninstalling the nvidia driver/installing nvidia- bumblebee? Maybe your Xorg.0.log would show a problem, or at least show the output of "glxinfo | grep render" to see what OpenGL renderer is used, as I already mentioned.
Really, what I want, and what I always loved about KDE, was that I could have a spartan desktop. I don't want pomp and circumstance, and I certainly don't want my desktop environment to require OpenGL when I spend most of my time in a text editor in a terminal.
Even KDE4 used OpenGL already. But it's true that Qt5 does use it in more places than before.
If the KDE way has simply changed, and that is no longer an option, it may be time for me to move on and find a different desktop environment. So, in that vein, I inquire: what are alternatives that offer a similar level of simplicity, but a similar set of features?
Compared to what? KDE4? I think at least some people would disagree about its "simpilcity", but well... ;) Some options probably are: KDE3, XFCE, LXDE, LXQT, Mate (a GNOME2 fork), ...
