Again, it shouldn't be "unacceptably" slow IMHO. Have you tried switching to XRender? Have you tried to disable desktop effects completely? Yeah, it's really weird. Sometimes launching applications from KLauncher, it just hangs for up to a minute before doing anything. First thing I tried to do was to disable desktop effects, but, they never go away and for some reason, every time I reboot, they are enabled again. I tried switching to XRender, but that didn't help either. Even my cursor theme setting isn't being honored on reboot, so I'm not even sure if the configuration is working.
This would sound like you still have problems with the (intel) graphics driver. Does the same happen in "recovery mode"?
Did you run "mkinitrd" after uninstalling the nvidia driver/installing nvidia- bumblebee?
Maybe your Xorg.0.log would show a problem, or at least show the output of "glxinfo | grep render" to see what OpenGL renderer is used, as I already mentioned.
Same thing in recovery mode. I had not, but now I have; I'm not sure what effect that would have given this now seems to be an issue with the Intel card. I have attached the log file, it was definitely using the Mesa renderer before as you had mentioned, but I'm having problems opening Konsole at the moment to get the output. Oh vey.
Even KDE4 used OpenGL already. But it's true that Qt5 does use it in more places than before.
Fair, I just used to be able to actually disable desktop effects, so that's kind of the deal breaker for me.
Compared to what? KDE4? I think at least some people would disagree about its "simpilcity", but well... ;)
Some options probably are: KDE3, XFCE, LXDE, LXQT, Mate (a GNOME2 fork), ...
Hah, yeah, I mostly liked the old KDE3 days and not being forced to have any flashiness that I don't find adds value to my computing experience. For now, if I could do a few simple things, I'd be okay:
1) Have my settings change persist across sessions. I have no idea why, when I change mouse theme or splash theme or disable desktop effects, these are not honored. 2) Have a task bar. I cannot configure desktop widgets at all at the moment, because right clicking on the desktop does not give a context menu. That is some rather broken functionality, in my book.
So, if there is anything you can think of so that I can get these things working, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks again!
