It would be nice if this discussion would center around what features we need for openSUSE (from servers to whatever ultraportable devices) and what bootloader would be the most likely one to deliver them instead of everyone advocating her/his pet bootloader.
So this is what I can think of at moment, for a structure, there must be other things that are problems for GRUB as we use it.
GRUB 0.97 isn't offering :
* EFI support
* Reliable ReiserFS boot partition
* LVM support
* upstream support (no central collection of fixes)
Desirable Features in replacement Boot programs
* Text Config file, easy for user to hack & YaST to parse for config options
* Run-time flexibility - try out test kernels, boot from newly available partitions NO map files!
* Boot from all media HDD, USB, CD/DVD
* Eye Candy for non-technical users (boot magic (came with COL) allowed mouse selection and was "loved")
* Be direct & efficient if no frills required
* Low maintenance, good upstream support
My idea when I suggested lilo was that, perhaps, there is no current bootloader that supports all situations. Perhaps we need to have more than one, and lilo is a posibility. And, perhaps, "lilo" can be automatically run on halt/reboot if a modification is detected, to regenerate the map file. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
