I've been using btrfs as may main filesystem for ages and even when I rebalance manually, which I do every now and then, I never saw the whole system freeze up in any bad way, so not sure what you are talking about.

For me, just yesterday, pc unuseable, Sysrq->reboot. I'm using btrfs only on a test machine..
