I don't think such a decision should be left to a little group, even their work been fundamental. This was decided by a vote years ago, and a minority should not revoke a previous decision made by the majority some years earlier.
Fair enough.
However, would you not agree that a major change in the source base of the "regular" openSUSE release should be accompanied by a change in numbering?
Perhaps.
If we end up with a SLE source based regular release because those that do the release work decide that's the way to go should this not be called something different than 13.3?
If the answer to those two questions is yes, then I would say it is fair to say that the starting point of a new version number is arbitrary. Thus, 42 is a good or bad as any number.
Perhaps. I don't oppose to call the new release "42", if that is what a vote decides. I don't like it, though, the number 42 doesn't mean anything to me (I had to read it up), so the pun, joke or whatever is lost on me. That guide to the galaxy thing is not universally known. Me, I would prefer a numbering system that clearly shows the SLES version the work is derived from. If it comes from SLES 12 SP 2, it would have to be something wit 12 2 in the name. However, I will accept any voted decision. That's my main point. :-) If "those who make it, decide", then I'm also a small contributor. I make a small part of it. Quite small.
