This is a corner case, but I have a MacBookPro 1,1 that has a 32-bit firmware and a 64-bit-capable processor. As such, it is stuck on Mac OS X 10.6 32-bit and I am dual-booting it with openSUSE 13.2 i586. It'd be nice if I could get another OS level out of it, but not the end of the world.
x86_64 kernel can be booted on a system with 32-bit UEFI and IIRC even examples with MacBook Pro ca be found on the web; I've seen some while looking for hints to make my Acer Aspire Switch 10E work. It's not straightforward (yet) and it can be a bit tricky but it can be done.
