SUSE is evaluating drop of Legacy boot support, please let us know if you foresee any issues. Please be aware that SLES 16 / Leap 16 support requires x86_64-v2 so I personally believe that there won't be many cases where such a system would not support UEFI.
There are a LOT of cases where legacy servers quietly do there job running at 1-10% utilization, have no UEFI capability, and have absolutely no reason to be replaced just to be able to boot UEFI. This is about as well thought out as the Windows 11 hardware requirements. Look at it from a COST/BENEFIT analysis. How much does is cost SUSE to retain BIOS boot? How much benefit does SUSE gain by driving customers heavily invested in legacy hardware to some other vendor that will support them? I've always tried to avoid shooting myself in the foot -- if at all possible. If the cost to SUSE to keep legacy boot outweighs the risk of losing those folks, well, then I guess it's "just business", screw 'em... However if the cost to keep legacy boot is minimal, then I'd think twice before pulling the trigger. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
