Hi All, I've currently set up a machine (RH 7.1 sorry!) to be both an extra file server and intranet server. To get content up on the intranet I'm using FTP through both Leech FTP and Dreamweaver. However I'm currently experiencing a massive time delay when trying to initiate the FTP session (likewise with Telnet; server is using WU-FTPD), once in it's fine. This would be ok for myself but in the future we will be running web development courses and I require this server to be used by students and a delay of this length would be unacceptable. The HTTP service however (apache) is running instantly and serves everythin as soon as you request it. The machine I'm using was orginally an NT server and suffered no problems at all with any type of time delay. It has 256Mb RAM, Intel Fast Ethernet NIC, gallons of disk space (RAID 5 array) and a 750 AMD processor. It's plugged into a fast Ethernet switch and even if you're on the same switch as it you still suffer the delay. Any help would be gratefully received. The fact that you have the same problem with telnet suggests a DNS problem. My first guess is that the telnet and ftp daemons are trying to do a reverse lookup on your clients' IP addresses and failing. When the lookups finally time out, you get your session started. Make sure your server can do reverse lookups on your client IP's by whatever means is appropriate to your system and these delays will probably go. I would stake money on it being a problem with name resolution. Check that all forward and reverse name lookups are working properly from the server. HTH, Michael

This suggest to me that you have a DNS problem. Since
Telnet and FTP experience time delays, it is possible
that you have a reverse lookup in operation.
