RE: [suse-linux-uk-schools] (Off-Topic: W2k profile discussion)
seem to change the contents of My Documents when you log off! So you can't save work? Can't be right! What am I doing wrong?
My Documents can be redirected and excluded from the profile using ntconfig.pol. In this way, applications will look to a networked home directory automatically, and you don't get masses of files downloaded at logon.
If you're using Windows 2000 take a look at : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders It has various parts of the profile that you can re-direct. For example, here we change the Favorites to point at a networked drive. This means every browser in the school gets the same set of links in the Favourites menu. We can allow staff to add their own links but pupils cannot. As mentioned above it's best to do this in ntconfig.pol. If you don't have a policy editor template that allows this I can send you one. atb Joe Garfoot

I've redirected My Documents at home last night, and found a very odd problem... It was pointing to H:\MyWork... It worked until I tried to delete a folder from MyWork wherein it would be deleted and then magically reappear when I next logged on! I managed to replicate the problem here at school today on two different test machines! Someone had this with XP/Samba? Have you excluded My Documents from the profile? (Look for "Exclude directories in roaming profile".) If not, your documents will be downloaded with the profile, you can then delete a file on H:\Mywork (in your case) but when you log off, everything will be copied back from the roaming profile on the local machine, restoring whatever you have deleted on the networked drive in the meantime, All the best, Nial.
