Hi, Like many of you, I have been dancing the Samba over easter. Yesterday (Thurs 28 Apr 2000), I upgraded my Linux box to SuSE 6.4 (installed from scratch). Tried getting Samba to talk to my Win 95 box - no joy at all, until Win crashed in frustration - registy error, and the network neighborhood SUDDENLY refreshed to show the Linux system. The problem is now fixed, but reproduceable. The solution is in the Win Registry, and comes down to encrypted passwords, USB supplemental pack, Y2K patch etc. Problem:- SAMBA shares do not show in Windows 95 'Network Neighborhood' or are displayed intermittently. Environment:- SuSE 6.4/Samba (sorry, forgot to get the version no.) Windows '95 OSR2b (USB supplement installed, Y2K patch installed, Internet Explorer 4.01 with Desktop Enhancements, patches etc. IEx 5.0 etc. etc. etc.) The solution:- (as in the SAMBA HOWTO) Using REGEDIT, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Vnetsup Create a new key of type DWORD Rename it as EnablePlainTextPassword Enter the value (Hex OR Dec) 1 This appears in the registy as 0x00000000000001(1) Exit (saves the registry automatically) ReBoot Windows.Windows will probably decide there is a Registry Error and ask to reboot. Let it. Now, the changes to HOWTO... Using REGEDIT, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Vnetsup Edit the key you created: EnablePlainTextPassword Enter the value in Decimal: 255 or in Hex: FF This appears in the registy as 0x00000011111111(255) Exit (saving registry automatically). ReBoot Windows.Windows will probably decide there is a Registry Error and ask to reboot. Let it. As often as it wants. When widows finally becomes stable again <wry grin, laughs manically>, you should see your SAMBA shares in Network Neighborhood. Please note, however, that the LINUX system must be up and running before Windows starts to load the VxD's, otherwise the shares remain un-notified to Windows, and Windows will remain oblivious to all of the good things on offer to it. - a strange solution to an odd problem. I suspect that the low-order byte in the DWORD is being masked at some point (so heaven alone knows what the other 7 bits are doing!)
