[opensuse-edu] RFC: What is the best layout for http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Applications/Desktop ?
Hi, all! IMHO, the current layout [1] is unusable, since it's too overfilled. My proposal is switching to something like this [2]. So we can just add Gnome, KDE icons, and may be some other information. And we can change headers name too packages' categories. Also I prefer this straightforward design [3] instead of our one [4] with many differently aligned blocks. Kirill, In order to subdivide the repository we need to finish labeling each software piece with more depth, This is why I created the columns with (?) in them , they need to be researched and the ? replace with X where appropriatte. then we can have : applications/Desktop/Gnome/ages4-12/science or math or language. feel free to start helping. I want to achieve another goal - to make this page usable to people, who are finding software for own needs, therefore as clear as possible, with out duplicating information, etc. I've done the following page for example: http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Applications/Desktop_Temp Kirill. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-edu+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-edu+help@opensuse.org

Kirill, Same goal. if we don't answer all the questions to subdivide i.e. is this math ? is this for an 8 yr old? is this ok on gnome? then we can't do what you want. I think we had this on the old page bevore. I tried to get the best of the two worlds and created a second example page: http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Applications/Desktop_Temp2 * headlines for small kids and teenagers should show the recommended age * KDE and Gnome icons at the end of the summary show the "OK" status * reduced descriptions (using the package summary line) makes it more clear * The packagename links to the full description on our wiki For me, the last point is important, as we can add the Category links to each package: [[Category:Education_recommend_age_4-12]] [[Category:Education_recommend_age_12-18]] [[Category:Education_Computer]] [[Category:Education_Languages]] [[Category:Education_Math]] .... I like kkirill idea to have the headlines also be links to the corresponding category (perhaps this should be more visible)! This would also define the available categories for Education apps: As each application should be listed on the Education/Applications page - and therefor sorted into one of the categories there - we already have defined the available categories which can be added at the end of the description page for each application. Only thing not really clear for me is if we still want the current categories/headlines defined on http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Applications/Desktop Note - this means: [[Category:Education_Computer]] is the category for small kids and not a general category containing all computer apps. ^^ Any Ideas? I have been advocating for this kind of package segregation for a while, both in the wiki and the add-on workflow. I am only sorry that I have had my hands full this year with working with my own setup of the server packages. http://apps.newmarket.k12.nh.us currently I am working on e-Directory integration (ldap) . I have been trying to more than answer my own questions and read several dozen e-mail lists. This work is very dear to me and I haven't forgotten it. Hi all, sorry not been active for ages, only been lurking for years... Some good work going on.
Only thing not really clear for me is if we still want the current categories/headlines defined on http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Applications/Desktop Note - this means: [[Category:Education_Computer]] is the category for small kids and not a general category containing all computer apps. ^^ Any Ideas? May I suggest that as said below, all software needs a sensible entry in a database (the more columns the better), then, rather than fill the page with everything, give the user the option of searching, a simple set of dropdowns of available entries rather than free-form with selections from ColumnV,
columnY, ColumnZ returns... As to the above category, why not use national curriculum years as the age guide?
So a returned term might be "select all tiles from allTitles where NCY => 1 and NCY <= 7 and subject = maths" This would allow the screen to be neat and tidy until the user messes it up with his selection. ;-) Personally I prefer the more graphical look and feel suggestions than the Spartan games site that was shown. I don't care for the table of contents approach, nor do I see the need for hiding parts of the window. FWIW! ;-) Adrian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-edu+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-edu+help@opensuse.org
