Sounds like a supervisor is imprinted with the Microsoft Method of .... Locate a local LINUX user group to see how they compare Windoze to LINUX. You will find a number of similarities. Then there is NOVELL who purchased XIMIAN in 2002 and SUSE in 2003. XIMIAN does a slick desktop and interfaces to Outlook. Then there's KNOPPIX. A fully functional LINUX on a CD (I and a number of folks use KNOPPIX as a diagnostic tool). The CD boots and mounts existing drives as READONLY. So you can use the supplied OpenOffice to access existing DOC, XLS, and PPT files. You can also run the browser to access the network/internet. Rob Andrews <rob@jam.rr.com> 05/26/2004 06:17 >>> I'd also forgotten I was on the list.
I'm a Network Engineer at a company that installs and supports computer networks in schools and universities in the SouthEast U.S. I'm looking out for ways to bring linux into the schools, but my boss won't let me discuss it with the customers because he's afraid it will leave them with the impression that I don't have full confidence in the other software we install and support. I've already had one customer ask if I can produce a working demo of a linux solution that would work in the TechPrep labs they have. I'm not sure if anyone on the list is familiar with labs such as Computer Discovery, Career Discovery, TechPrep, Technology Applications, etc., but if anyone knows how to implement these in whole or in part using SuSe, I've got at least one school who'd like to see it. And if I can provide one solid lead (generated by customer request, so the boss should be happy with that), I'll have something I can take to the boss. He's already said it's OK to do some R&D with regard to linux as long as it doesn't interfere with the current business we're doing. I can understand where he's coming from. He just wants to make a profit and avoid spooking the current customer base. -Rob -- To unsubscribe, email: suse-schools-usa-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands, email: suse-schools-usa-help@suse.com For help, email: suse-schools-usa-owner@suse.com
