I broke my graphical login...
No, X -query 127.0.0.1 gives a grey screen with a big cross cursor. Then an error messagee: localhost rejected client, or similar. /etc/hosts does have the necessary loopback device listed. -- Matt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I think whoever suggested X -query 127.0.0.1 went off
on a tangent.
What would be useful, is the output of the command
"strace" that would then help me to find out *where*
gdm is failing, thus:
strace -o /output.txt
big cross cursor.
Then an error messagee: localhost rejected client, or similar.
/etc/hosts does have the necessary loopback device listed.

Hey, that was me and it was a useful test! :-) We now know that X is working and that gdm is listening for XDMCP but is not accepting any connections. Name resolution has (just about) been eliminated as a potential cause and this is useful because name resolution accounts for approximately 50% of all problems. I don't know about the internals of GDM, but it seems as though it's an access control issue. Does GDM use xdm's configuration files or does it have its own? Michael

Check /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf in the section [xdmcp] is Enable=1 ? -- Simon Kelsall.
