Hello Folks,

We have made available the first version of our K12Linux - LTSP install CD-Rom. (Yes you will have to read the whole post to find the link!) ;-^)

Before we get to the nitty gritty, I want to thank all the people who have worked on LTSP. Your work is about to have a huge impact on schools using Linux in classrooms.

We also have to acknowledge the work of Eric Harrison from the Multnomah County Education Service District, OR. He is the one who put in many hours recompiling source RPM's and testing configurations to make this possible. He's done a great job. You'll appreciate it when you install and start booting workstations without editing a single file!

You'll have to go to the web site to download it but here are some quick highlights:

We've taken RH 7.0 and the LTSP packages and created an almost turn-key install. Eric has done a great job of integrating the LTSP rpms along with the RH 7 install engine. We've also incorporated the latest RH7 updates.

Here's a short list of what's on the install CD:

StarOffice - A powerful integrated office application suite (Yes, we have permission to redistribute StarOffice. It comes fully installed and functional in this version. It's not open source but Sun has given us permission to distribute it to schools via this CD-Rom) Netscape - Your basic web browser GIMP - A great graphics package gPhoto - A photograph manipulation tool Evolution - A complete IMAP/POP mail client and PIM Dia - A vector based drawing program DrGenius - A great geometry exploration program HitchHiker2000 - A 3D tour of the solar system Gnumeric - A powerful but easy to use spreadsheet Games - Several fun games - for learning purposes of course! ;-) FreeCiv - A multi-user Civilization game

More good news, we have 1000 FREE Intel Celeron 366 processors to give away to schools building K12LTSP workstations. We also have some FREE Xeon 733 cpu's for schools building terminal servers.

We're shooting for 1000 terminals in 100 schools by 1 day - July 4th. Follow the i-day links for more info on this program.
