Having given up for now on sendmail (still can't get it to download from external mail site ) I wanted a replacement. EXIM has been suggested before on this list. Good idea? James Carter South Lee School

sendmail can be a pain to configure :(

Yeah, I've used both exim and postfix and they seem to work pretty nicely. And much easier to configure. Debian has a nice configuration script for exim (which might be part of the exim main release and therefore on all distributions, I don't know), and SuSE setups up postfix out of the box :) - -- Cheers, Chris Howells -- chris@chrishowells.co.uk, howells@kde.org Web: http://chrishowells.co.uk, PGP key: http://chrishowells.co.uk/pgp.txt KDE: http://www.koffice.org, http://edu.kde.org, http://usability.kde.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE8bWZBF8Iu1zN5WiwRAn15AJ4iAEam7OwzmpICQ893A8L711YKCgCdEUKe Xuhh11e/8cAvTFYp9e/VO4M= =J2ax -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

What do you mean by download? Do you man pull email from an ISP, or do you mean allow inbound connections? If you mean the former, then no SMTP server will do that as it's not that server's job - have a look at fetchmail. If you mean the latter, then certainly have a look at Exim. The config file is (almost) plain english and pretty straight forward.
