Further to adding disks, I do like the way in which hard disks are identified on the system, with hda to hdc referring to the physical IDE address of the disk. Sometimes under win9x this can become very confusing when trying to identify the physical disk from it's logical name in a multi disk/multi partion set-up - especially when windows decides to change the drive letters! I must say that LINUX appears to be very stable - even when operated by someone as unstable as myself - I can attribute all crashes to myself (these usually are in the form of application crashes), but with multiple accounts I have only used the power switch a couple of times to clear problems! Number Lock I have number lock set up in my BIOS but it's not set on boot, is this LINUX over-riding the num lock status? The numlock is set in linux - in SuSE you can set it using the yast configuration file rc.config In my experience most crashes are X applications and, as you say, you can usually change to a different virtual console and kill the offending processes. Even if the console is locked up you can usually telnet in and kill and restart from a workstation on the network. If you can get access but feel the need to reboot it is often better to just restart with init s followed by init 2 (or 3 if you use the graphical login) _____________________________________ Giles Nunn - Network Manager Carms Schools ICT Development Centre Tel: +44 01239 710662 Fax: 710985 ____________________________________ On Mon, 27 Mar 2000, adrian.wells wrote:
