Thought I would forward this, sorry if it's already been sent. can anyone help esp as it's a shame to have computers just dumped in a skip esp when there are many kids without computers, around, Paul ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: [LUG] Computers for Schools (not Tesco's) Date: Tue, 18 Jun 2002 16:47:12 +0100 From: andy@andyrlweir.demon.co.uk To: list@dclug.org.uk Hi all, Sorry for the cross posting, but i thought this was a really worthwhile idea. (amazing how bean counters can skip what is potentially a 'Super Computer') Andy Weir ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi, It looks like I should be able to rescue a bunch (50ish) of Compaq 233-ish PCs that are being skipped this weekend, possibly with monitors to match. I'd like to see these installed running Debian in a school somewhere, but I've tried to make this happen before, and failed, so was wondering if any of you were in contact with any schools run by people capable of independent thought (unlike the ones I've met in the past) If so, you'll probably need to volunteer to look after them at least during the set-up, just so the computers don't end up gathering dust, but I wouldn't have thought it would be too much hassle to do as long as you start out with a specific goal, like "set up a web browsing lab" or "set up a word-processing lab", they can find out all the other stuff available as they go along, but if they cannot agree on the basis that they get a free facility as long as they find somewhere to put the machines, I don't think you'll get a result at the end of the day. Any takers? Any better ideas on how to use these? Anyone with a transit van (or artic. ;-) and a warehouse available? This is fairly urgent, since if they're not collected by Saturday, they go in a skip. I have a class II license (i.e. anything rigid, or trailers up to 7.5 tonnes. And vehicles can be hired! If anyone else has the other elements (warehousing, price of vehicle hire), I'm happy to drive...
