You don't say which distro you are using. Squid and Apache can normally work together with no conflicts. Under SuSE the default setup for a server is for both. I think it does depend partly how they are configured. I have successfully set up Squid on our system and it is working very well. However, at present the school intranet (not to the outside world just yet) is on another server and kids go through the proxy to get to it.
