RE: [suse-linux-uk-schools] cron job with ftp

Stop flirting with the other members - this is not a dating service :o)
LOL, LOL...... no, my girlfriend would go mad!! I was just curious to know how many students "help" out the school admins....
Ah, got one guy here who's from a tech college is 19, and I'm 20 and am full time :) You don't actually work at a school then?? Dug

Yep, Steve they do. But, no... I'm 15 and I've had more or less sole administrative responsibility for our school Linux servers for 2.5 years now - there's just no one else in the school has much knowledge of Linux. (BTW, I shouldn't really be on this list - we use Debian.) Martin

Lol, Bad Martin - get a debian-linux-uk-schools. Actually, this list seems to be the only source of non-capita-SIMS info (Linux or not!) and Linux in relation to schools. I'm only 16 (Sixth Form) - not really involed with "Admin" as such, more our in-house Content Management System (CMS) and our in-house 24 Hour School implementation. (viz: http://www.solented.co.uk/24hs.php) Anyone else hiding in the wordwork? Im 21, ive replaced our last techie and upgraded the entire system from scratch (it needed it). i used to use it as a student (upto 6th form). Went to uni (im in my final year now) and i got offered a job when i was half way through my 2nd year. Now i have been offered a full time position when i graduate :) Infact ive been told to find a new techie to do the dirty jobs... some interesting talent in our year 11's. :) Our 6th form is only interested in partying or the sparse number of girls that exist in our 6th form. We use Win2k, with .net intranet services for remote file access etc. I may open source it and let everyone use it... -- Greg Bennett On Mon, 24 Feb 2003 19:58:49 -0000, Kyle Williamson <kyle@solented.co.uk> wrote:

Kyle, I see that you're resident in Soton -- so am I. Perhaps I can come and visit your workplace??? I'd be interested to see how Linux is being used there. What an interesting thread! I'm 62, worked in IT for 35 years. I was going to follow my son's footsteps into plumbing, then discovered Linux. Something else I was going to say... Just to get back on-topic for a moment. A simple ftp session inside a bash wrapper would do the job very nicely thankyou, and would involve very little programming - just redirect the stdin to a simple heredoc, e.g. #!/bin/bash ftp -ivn remote.ftp.server << %% user username password cd thedirectory lcd thisdirectory mput * bye %% However, using perl and Net::FTP and a simple directory globbing loop would give better control and logging. Alternatively, rsync could do the job, and in theory much quicker as it's only supposed to move the files that change. Personally, I found it slow when I tried to use it for RPM propagation. Gary

Well Martin, I use Debian too (but, shhhh.....it's a secret :-) I was originally subscribed to this list when I set-up the proxy servers that we had running at school (and I used SuSE for that :-) apt-get? -- yes please :-) -- Thomas Adam ===== Thomas Adam "The Linux Weekend Mechanic" -- www.linuxgazette.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
