Banning internet access via netbios names
We have squid running on a Proxy Server which works great, however we would like to be able to switch internet access off by the room. Ideally using the netbios names to identify the machines as we have come to the conclusion that using static IPs is impracticable. We would also like teachers to have access to switch this access on and off. Can anyone HELP! cheers Nathan Harris
What's impractical about static IP's, you can get DHCP to give each machine the same IP using the lan cards MAC address. Rob At 12:05 22/04/02 +0100, you wrote:

Use a proper DHCP server and an internal DNS and you get netbios names that
the DNS can resolve. 8-)>

What's mostly needed is the ability to lockout individual pupils from the Internet based on their 'User Login Name' and at particular times of the day (during ICT and other lessons) rather than on the basis of locking out a particular PC machine. I was wondering if there is any way of setting up Internt Explorer or Netscape so that application checks for a file on the server or a cookie (held in the user account area) that has to be present in order for the browser to access the Internet at large? Squid already has code to do DNS queries, you'd need to add new code if you wanted to do NETBIOS queries.
that using static IPs is impracticable. We would also like teachers to have
It's not that hard..
access to switch this access on and off.
