Re: [suse-linux-uk-schools] SIF and UK/Linux
Yes - it's already in this country, see http://www.dfee.gov.uk/ims/cbds.shtml and I hope we will be using this sort of format soon.
Hmmm. Not a particularly good start - much of the documentation (even the FAQs) for this appear to be provided in proprietory document formats! Kevin.
Not a very good start at all - Can I make a 'revolutionary' suggestion here? Come on all you lot - email the DFEE and tell them their M$ only policy stinks - Last time I did this over the teacher threshold applications they made the .rtf formatted and pdf formatted documents available. If we sit back and do nothing then nothing is going to happen about a 'common' format for data transfer - other than that the 'common' format will become Microsoft - I'm sick of this stupid irresponsible behaviour on the part of these people. Open gov only works if you running something other than linux and it's time someone put a stop to such behaviour! If you agree then email the dfee and complain like mad (but nicely of course!) What makes this worse, is that they even thought about this being a problem and provided a solution. They include on the page a link to a page containing *viewers* for the documents. If course, these are Windows progs. Is this another one of the sites developed by MS bods? BTW, I didn't get a single reply about the letter to MP's. Do I take it from that that people didn't think it was a good idea, not just not a good letter? Gary On Tuesday 22 May 2001 9:46 am, Alan Harris wrote:

From their site there is a feedback option which I returned to them saying just what I thought about proprietry formats. Perhaps something to ask those fellows on the hustings in the coming weeks!
