I have been using the MIX Xserver (which used to be free but I get the impression they now want money for the latest versions) We use this to access our LINUX box from PC stations to write C programs and 'play' with another operating system. MIX has its own window manager (twm with W95 furniture) but is quite limited. You can also run it without a WM - and run fvwm and fvwm2 at the LINUX end, but fvwm95 causes a trail of errors and kde sometimes works...and sometimes doesn't. Lots of errors are because of missing fonts (BDF types) which can apparenlty be donwloaded from various sites but the instructions for doing so are unclear and convoluted. It also complains about 'SHAPE' commands in X. Does anyone have experience of using MIX? Have you added fonts? (Yes, I'm after someone who has done the work already....well there's no point in repeating it!) Please don't tell me how good Hummingbird et al are - they cost money. Are there any other free Xservers that run in windows (or DOS for that matter)? Has anyone tried the 'web based' Office applications like www.thinkfree.com and others that download JAVA applets to run MS Office compatible programs over and Internet link to an ASP? -- Alan Davies Head of Computing Birkenhead School
