I can't telnet or start an Xsession from a client (PC runing Xserver).
Didn't have a problem with this - our LTSP boxes kept working. I can't telnet either - and I looked at hosts.allow and uncommented the line in.telnetd which I thought should have allowed all remote hosts....but the message on the telnet client is that the connection was closed by the remote. Is inetd running? I think it won't be by default. Cheers -- Phil Driscoll

Yes, you need to run inetd and I can telnet ok but .......... I can't ftp with Suse 8.0. I've enabled ftp in inet.conf but the daemon doesn't seem to be running ie I can't see it after a ps x. What am I missing? Dave Williams

OK - I started inetd. BUT I STILL CAN'T telnet. Connection closed by remote/foreign host message at client end. Clicked the box in YAST2 to allow graphical XDM remote access - but still can't connect a remote X session either. Still....squid works OK.

Here is my init.d/smb file. I have modified this to start
winbindd as per documentation - BUT IT STILL DOESNT start
automatically. Strange - as smd and nmd start up fine.
As for remote xmd - I keep selecting the 'allow remote graphical logon' tick
box in yast2 and when you go through yast again - its unticked. I therefore
still cant get this to work - nor remote (or even local) telnet session to
SUSE8.0

Have you tried port scanning (using nmap should do) the boxes to see if the services are acutally running on the expected ports?
