Do any list members have experience of running a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) under Linux? Which UPS do you use? How do I configure the Linux server to do a proper shutdown when the UPS trips in? Thanks in anticipation. Miles Berry, CCCS, Oxford and St Ives, Haslemere

I'm using an APC BackUPS Pro420 on this system: celeron + 19" monitor, headless 486, modem and hub. It never reaches more than 70% of its capacity. The software I use is apcupsd which is available at sunsite although I understand that APC now produce their own software. Check out the UPS howto and the docs that come with apcupsd with regards setting it up. You can set apcupsd to be a server ie it will tell other machines on the network to shut down also (assuming they've got power on outage also). It's not too difficult to set up and well worth the relatively small cost, essential if you're running any kind of server IMHO - this UPS was about 130 quid from Dabs. -- Frank Shute *-------*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-------* | Boroughbridge | Tel: 01423 323019 | PGP keyID: 0xC0B341A3 | *-------*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-------* http://www.esperance.demon.co.uk/
There is a free download of APC's "powerchute" for Linux on their website. Of course I forget their URL! There are several UPS scripts for the APC range of supplies and I used to use one of them a couple of years back which worked fine first time with a SMARTups. Try a quick look on the net, that's where I found several. -- Best wishes, Derek Harding derek@lagham.zetnet.co.uk
