[opensuse-edu] Learning the Open Source Way Project - inquiry regarding announcment possibility
Good morning We, the FLOSSCom team & Ubuntu education, just started the “Learning the Open Source Way” project . The project is not about using open source software in education, but about the way open source communities and individuals learn. We believe that the open source way of learning could help improving (formal) education, e.g. the support model, the way of content creation, the individual skills people gain… Would there be a chance to promote this project through opensuse education? I don’t think that there should be any competition between opensuse EDU and edubuntu, but a common interest for all - but if there is, just let me know. I included below the promotion text as to be announced at the Ubuntu side, more information can be found at www.flosscom.net, or just ask me directly. Regards Andreas ====================================== Learning the Open Source Way Project Announcement ====================================== You use open source software. You work with it and you know how to help yourself when you run into a particular problem. You share your experiences and know-how with others on the internet. You participate. Perhaps you didn't realise that this makes you one of the more advanced learners on our planet? Have you considered yourself being a very talented learner and communicator? At the beginning of July, the FLOSSCom team and Ubuntu Education have launched the “Learning the Open Source Way” project. We want to advance our collective understanding on how learning, communication and collaboration works in open source and how these experiences can help to improve (formal) education. We are interested in learning what you are doing out here, your experiences and how you see things work. I invite you to join me and our group of interested learners and educators, currently including people from Germany, Greece, Portugal, the Netherlands, South Africa and the United Kingdom... Please come along for our virtual meetups and share your experiences and insights from the open source world! We are itiching to learn from your way of doing things in the open source community! We just started so there are still many ways to get involved and to help us shaping this project. Want to get a picture of what we are up to? Than check out what we did so far at Launchpad (http://launchpad.net/flosscom) and the FLOSSCom website (http://www.flosscom.net) , or join or re-listen to some of our meetings and talks (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/flosscom/talks). Our last three meetings/talks focused on: 1. Topic: What is the motivation to participate in FLOSS? 2. Topic: What does FLOSS learning feel like? 3. Topic: What are the roles in FLOSS? The coming three meetings/talks will focus on: 1. Topic: Summer University Newbie Introduction 2. Topic: What is the FLOSS support system? 3. Topic: How is FLOSS learning different from ‘normal’ education? You know that you can make a difference in open source, so you certainly can make it here too! -- With kind regards, Mit freundlichen Grüßen Com os melhores cumprimentos Andreas Meiszner _________________________________________ Institute of Educational Technology The Open University Milton Keynes MK7 6AA United Kingdom -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-edu+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-edu+help@opensuse.org

Hello Lars First at all thanks for the answer. I had a look at the different opensuse spaces and some possible ways I saw are listed below. As I am not familiar with your internal processes some options might be an immediate “no go”. 1. The opensuse news section at http://news.opensuse.org (e.g. at “Anouncements” or “Events”) 2. The opensuse education news section at http://en.opensuse.org/Education_News 3. A small banner within a box at the opensuse education page (http://en.opensuse.org/Education) that links to the news article (suggestions 1 and 2). 4. At http://en.opensuse.org/Projects below the Education Project like “Education – Open Source like Educational Approaches” and than a short explanatory text. As we are seeking to attract not only open source experts and educational experts, but the communities at large, I am not sure which spaces would be most suitable. Besten Dank! Andreas, Please don't be discouraged by the lack of response to your last e-mail. It is a very busy time for Lars and since he is our inside leader, the decision regarding opportunities like the one you propose are brought by him to the opensuse management team and then Novell and it's lawyers if need be. He always answers but it takes time. just a run down of what I know Lars does; 1) New Dad 2) iso manager \pattern maintainer for opensuse 3) maintains several key repositories including the two for our project 4) interacts with a multitude of very demanding projects Lars, Thanks again for all you do here! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-edu+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-edu+help@opensuse.org
Hello James Thanks for the feedback on this and detailed explanation! I am not discouraged and know that time is a rare good nowadays and I am still hoping that Lars or some others will find some minutes on this.
