Remember: there are other ways to get high-speed access than ADSL and cable. A number of wireless networking projects are underway and more interested people are welcome at most of them. The largest project site is
Particularly if the user is happy to be severely filtered, as would be required for any pupil accessing school resources through the same network... And they'd probably need to use something with a little more "intelligence", like the Vivato stuff, as the pupils would need access to the school's resources, not just the Internet - see: http://vivato.net -----Original Message----- From: Josef Davies-Coates To: MJ Ray Cc: suse-linux-uk-schools@suse.com; vortex@free2air.net Sent: 5/12/03 1:43 PM Subject: Re: [suse-linux-uk-schools] ADSL speeds into school I think that ALL schools (and libraries) should act as local community wireless nodes. So long as these networks are community owned the potential benefits from such a system could be huge for everyone. Other sites to check out (aprat from the already mentioned http://www.consume.net) are http://www.free2air.org and http://www.freenetworks.org Best, Josef Davies-Coates MJ Ray wrote: probably

I cannot imagine _anyone_ being prepared to use the BGfL (Birminghan) as their only internet connection! If filters are extreme - to the point of stupidity... You cannot access on-line bank accounts, slashdot was filtered for weeks before our screaming was heard, I could go on... I guess this cuts to the point that when this Government money runs out, then these local GfL's are going to have to become very competative, very quickly. Anyone up for a small wager?

Filtering appears to be a major form of contention. With what isn't filtered being as much a cause of complaint for as what isn't. RM (who have the contract for quite a few RBC) by policy do not filter games, even though these account for a lot of wasted time (and bandwidth). If the link is legitimate, ask them to unfilter it.
