Re: [suse-linux-uk-schools] squid proxy help thanks
thanks to everyone for help. hmmm thought it might be to do with DNS. I have the machine set up as a DNS server but not a caching DNS server (because i never heard of one LOL) so if you know how to set one up or could point me in the right direction i would be gratefull. I've looked through all the config files but can't see any options that would change things. thanks sparkz
Linux Documentation Project, DNS How To http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html Or preferably your nearest mirror e.g. for the UK http://www.linuxdoc.org/mirrors.html#uk Then just follow the HowTo link after selecting your nearest server. urpmi caching-nameserver installs a set-up-and-working-out-of-the-box caching DNS server on the distribution I use (Mandrake). It's probably worth looking for a similarly-named package in whichever distribution you use. Michael
The setup for a caching-only DNS server is basically the same as any other; it doesn't have any config files to act as master or slave for specific domains - just the files for localhost and root servers. Most distros will have this setup as the default, you will just need to check it and start it. The DNS-howto is quite good. ____________________________________ Giles Nunn - Network Manager Carms Schools ICT Development Centre Tel: +44 01239 710662 Fax: 710985 ____________________________________ On Mon, 14 May 2001, sparkz wrote:

BIND should do this by default. But if it can't access either forwarders or a root server (depending how it configured.) It may not always work (even when the cached data is in theory still valid.) -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763
