Re: [suse-linux-uk-schools] Graphics install problem (2)
This tends to be the sort of question for an email war. I will give you my opinions.
Don't think that'd ever happen here. (!)
SuSE provides probably a dozen editors - experiment when you have spare time. Which you choose depends on what you have used in the past. I suggest you look at axe, joe, jove sometime. joe uses wordstar keys (approximately). For most conf file editing etc I use a simple editor called pico. It is very simple to use with on-screen prompts for the control keys used for most functions; it doesn't have many - it has no replace function and you have to cut and uncut to copy or move text. It is easy and quick and it is included with most distributions For more complex tasks I would recommend learning vi - it is the default for most unices and quick and powerful - but not easy to start with. emacs is very good but much bigger and slower on a slow PC.
The new machine seems to cope with emacs just fine. I tried it out today with success.
While we are on the subject of working in the console I suggest you look at midnight commander (mc) for file management and pine for email. I use pine all the time, even when I am using a GUI.
Excellent. I'm sure that not being able to use pretty things may actually do me a lot of good. This is *exactly* the sort of advice I need. I'm sure this *is* what this list is for. I'll try mc & pine out this weekend. Thanks Giles. -- Matt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
