Hi all: Has anyone had any experience using Linux clients with Novell servers? Can anyone point me to a quick and dirty guide to read as there seems to be little in the manuals. My new school network manager is keen to try Linux integration but has little Linux experience and I have never seen a Novell server other than when playing with one during my CCAI training. Paul

Hi all:
Paul.

Forgive me for saying so, but this e-mail is extremely limited in terms of information, and to be quite honest, makes no sense. A Linux client can indeed be used with a Novell server. You'll want to have samba running so that you can exchange files, etc. What you neglect to mention is exactly *what* (if anything) the Linux client will be doing. In short, you can get it to do anything. Could you be more specific please? -- Thomas Adam ===== Thomas Adam "The Linux Weekend Mechanic" -- www.linuxgazette.com ________________________________________________________________________ Want to chat instantly with your online friends? You'll find that the commands slist and ncpmount probably give you most of what you need. Assuming that the Novell server is running TCP/IP, then slist should produce a list of available, visible, Novell servers to which you can attach. ncpmount is the command to use to access any of the Novell volumes and bind them to the Linux tree. You'd be wise to look at the man page for this, especially noting use of the -U switch, as choosing your Novell user needs to be done with some care, if you do not have matched usernames on the Linux box. It is the Novell permissions that ultimately control what the user may do to the files. It really is easy after that. In response to Thomas's suggestion ...

You won't. Samba and the support for Novell are two totally separate and distinct networking systems. Samba uses the server message block (SMB) as its packet-wrapping protocol. Novell uses NCP, which is their proprietary upper layer. I have no more time to spend on this reply at present, but let me know if you are still stcuk, and I'll try and find a window (an X-window, of course) of opportunity to help you! I have connected linux clients to Novell via IPX only as well. Connects via NDS too.
Try at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/novelclient/
Guy can't spell Novell but he can write a client.

I now know that! I was e-mailed off list by Derek Grainger who clarified this. My apologies for mis-understanding your original question. -- Thomas Adam ===== Thomas Adam "The Linux Weekend Mechanic" -- www.linuxgazette.com ________________________________________________________________________ Want to chat instantly with your online friends?
