Hi All I have an two 3 pieces of hardware trying to use the same IRQ according to the system manager in SuSE 7 KDE2. It does not give me the option to change the IRQ manually. How do I do it? Dowdales School, Cumbria

What pieces are sharing the IRQ? Are the ISA or PCI? IF they are PCI, then you probably don't have a problem. One of the benefits of PCI is that IRQ's can be shared by multiple cards. Even if they are ISA, it may not be a problem.

The first problem would be to the the hardware to use different IRQ's, before telling the s/w. Once you've got the h/w sorted, how you would change the s/w settings depends on what kit it is. For instance, if it's a serial port card, you'd use the setserial command. If you need more help, please supply more information - e.g. The IRQ they're sharing, make and model of cards, and what they are (serial, eth etc.) Also, are you actually having problems because of this, or is it just that you don't like it.

Best thing to do is open /etc/rc.d/serial and auto-irq the devices you are having problems with. Have a look in this file there is a brief explanation. Make sure you use the autoconfig afterwards though. Might work!
