Thanks for all the router traffic{Router IP addresses}
Thanks to everyone who has chipped in on this thread. I am simultaneously more informed and confused! Definitely confused about Demon now. Our school dial up account with Demon has a dynamically assigned IP address (DAIPA)! Are there other sorts of Demon accounts. James Carter South Lee School www.southlee.demon.co.uk

Er, I didn't think so, but it certainly looks like I could be wrong :) Best to ring support ( numbers are on http://www.demon.net ), and see what they say. I'll be looking into this myself, so if you don't get the answer you want from them ( I certainly don't envy them trying to understand enough about all aspects of an entire ISP ) either get in touch offline or on the list. -- Nick Drage - half understanding Pegasus until he gets his Linux partition sorted out......

BUT - be aware that ANYONE can find out your IP ADDRESS as you can see. Good security on your local network is essential. ------------------- Richard Hobday Network Manger Haywards Heath College West Sussex RH16 1LT WWW: http://www.hhcoll.demon.co.uk Mail: rlh@hhc.ac.uk 01444 456281 X223

Simply using nslookup to look up your hostname.
I assumed that my account was dynamic because that was what I set in dial up networking (oops almost wrote DUN)
All you're doing is asking the server which IP address you should use, and seeing as you have a static IP you'll always be given the same reply. -- Nick Drage - half understanding Pegasus until he gets his Linux partition sorted out......

Demon Dialup accounts all use Static IP addresses, what are you using to see if the IP address is static or dynamic?
Are there other sorts of Demon accounts.
Only those used by VISPs ( Virtual Internet Service Provider - an ISP that essentially resells another ISP's services under it's own brand ).
James Carter South Lee School www.southlee.demon.co.uk
As far as I can tell you should always connect as: [root@hostname nickd]# nslookup southlee.demon.co.uk Server: cache-1.ns.demon.net Address: 158.152.1.58 Name: southlee.demon.co.uk Address: 193.237.229.2 193.237.229.2 Yes? ( left on the list as I'm presuming the forthcoming discussion of determining your IP address will prove useful to some ) -- Nick Drage - half understanding Pegasus until he gets his Linux partition sorted out......
