RE: [suse-linux-uk-schools] SIMS / PHP
Don't know if it is of help but the common transfer (and the plasc forms) generate XML output which you may be able to use to transfer information into, and out of, SIMS.

If you find such a "magic button" could you also check for one which works with LEAs :)
Don't know too much about this, but won't the DfES common data format allow transfer of all the data from SIMS to other databases? I thought the idea of the CDF was to make the data independent of the system it was in?
Considering the fun we had with PLASC I'm not convinced that this concept is well understood by the decision makers.

Not really, since the problem is more political than technical. LEA deciding (without consultation) that all schools must use some web based transfer system, which requires Virus Explorer (Indeed one I had previously rejected for exam EDI because of user interface complexity.) Nor is XML some "magic bullet" for information transfer. You need to know the tag definitions first :)
